Junior ROTC Teams
This is a list of all of the teams which our program offers at Rockvale High School along with a brief description of each, to find out how to join, simply ask one of our instructors!
Raiders
The Raider Team is a competitive team that focuses on physical endurance and conditioning. A Raider Team Competition normally includes the Army Physical Fitness Test, CCR course with equipment, Raider Gauntlet (obstacle course), Land Navigation, and One Rope Bridge Competition. The team is VERY PHYSICALLY DEMANDING. See MSG Pick for more information concerning the Raider Team.
Drill Team
Drill team consists of a platoon sized element - twelve cadets and a commander - performing a Drill sequence with the M1903 Drill Rifle. They compete at several different competitions around Tennessee, and they have a good time while doing it. The Drill team focuses on Discipline and Teamwork. Members are expected to uphold the Cadet Creed and the Army Values more than any of the other cadets in the program. You don't have to do anything other than show up to practice to join, however in order to travel to competitions, those competing must fill out a permission slip.
Color Guard
Have you ever been to a football or basketball game for your school? Did you see the cadets in uniform presenting the colors during the national anthem? That would be the Color Guard. The Color Guard requires the utmost respect and honor for our country. They present the colors from special events like graduation to home basketball games every other week. Moreover, they also compete by performing Color Guard sequences at drill competitions. In order to be a member of the color guard you must also be a part of the drill team, and the only requirement is that you show up to practice.
Sabre Team
Sabre Team is the most disciplined team in the program. Only used a few times a year, this team shows up at events such as homecoming or military ball and add to the "court" element at these events. In order to join cadets must be selected by the commander of the Sabre Team from the color guard. This means that in order to join you must be an outstanding member of both the Drill Team and the Color Guard. You must have at least some prior experience and show great military bearing.
Rifle Team
Rifle Team travels all over the southeast to compete in competitions where they shoot at a ten target page with a Challenger rifle from ten meters either standing, kneeling, or lying down. This team is also the earliest to arrive at the school on practice mornings, as they have to set up the range, shoot, and tear down all before school starts, so there is a high level of commitment required. Different from most of the other teams, this team has tryouts. Speak with MSG Pick to find out more about how to join.
JLAB
The Junior ROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl is the program's academic team. They compete in several different levels of testing, each level qualifying them for the next. It is split between two teams, the leadership team and the academic team. The leadership test consists of several different categories such as Army Leadership questions and Current Event questions. The academic test is split into different categories such as science and math. Just like Rifle Team, JLAB takes test in order to try out for the team. Cadets will take both tests and will be placed on their team accordingly.
